Former President Jimmy Carter Enters Hospice Care

Grandson: Carter is 'approaching the end of life'

Carter, 98, has been dealing with health issues for several years

Former President Jimmy Carter has entered hospice care at his home in Georgia, his foundation announced Saturday.

Carter, 98, has been dealing with health issues for several years, including cancer and multiple falls.

"After a series of short hospital stays, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter today decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care," the Carter Center said in a statement.

"The Carter family asks for privacy during this time and appreciates the many messages of support they have received."

Carter's grandson, Jason Carter, said in a tweet Tuesday that the former president is "approaching the end of life."

"He has lived a long and full life and has always been a source of inspiration for me and countless others," Jason Carter said.

Carter, a Democrat, served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981. He is the oldest living former president.
